Wil Bolton - Slate
Wil Bolton's 'slate' forms the perfect backdropo to Dean Potter's pioneering rock climb. To shoot this short documentary, the photographer and filmmaker Mikey Shaefer set up a camera more than a mile away, juxtaposing the rising full moon with Potter’s walk across a highline at Cathedral Peak in Yosemite National Park. The result is breathtaking, a moon shot that is simultaneously a forceful testament to what humans can achieve and a reminder that we are still tiny in the awesome face of nature.
Director Biography: Mikey Schaefer is a photographer, filmmaker and climber with a house in central Oregon, a post office box in Yosemite National Park, and a shack in El Chalten, Argentina. He embraced the climbing life as teenager, moved to Yosemite and eventually began pioneering difficult routes, first in Yosemite and then in other out-of-the-way places around the world. His commitment to the vertical life evolved into telling visual stories for the largest brands in the outdoor industry, including Patagonia, Red Bull, Black Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, Prana, Outdoor Research, 5.10, and La Sportiva. His editorial work has appeared in National Geographic, Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal, Alpinist, Climbing, and Rock and Ice. He has done cinematography work for National Geographic TV, 60 Minutes, Fox Searchlight, Duct Tape Then Beer, and Sender Films.
